In Math, we tested over chapter 7 last week and your child will bring this test home on Monday. I was pleased with how well they did. This chapter focused on greater than, less than, equal to and patterns on the 100 chart identifying 10 more or 10 less from a given number. We will begin chapter 8 this week, which is titled "Two-Digit Addition and Subtraction". Our lessons will focus on adding and subtracting within 20, using a hundred chart and models to add, making a ten to add, using place value to add, and problem solving. We will also continue to do progressive timings at least 3 times a week and equality number work.
In Reading, we also had a unit test last week over Unit 4. This test has already been sent home and hopefully you've had a chance to look over it. With conferences last week and a shorter week, we did not start Unit 5. We will start Unit 5 this week. I used the four day week to give the unit test and we also worked on creating our "informative writing piece". The topic of "penguins" was chosen. We started by reading information from 3 different sources. After each reading they identified important facts from the reading and I recorded them on chart paper, while they wrote them on note cards. After gathering facts from the 3 sources, they filled out an organizer writing out 4 of their favorite facts about penguins using complete sentences. Over the weekend, I edited their sentences and on Monday they will use the organizer with completed facts and transfer them to a final copy. When looking at their final copy, I will be checking to see if their sentences "start right", "end right", and "make sense". Of course, they will be encouraged to have spaces between words and nice printing. Our reading goals two weeks ago were to read and spell words with "y as the long e sound", summarizing after we read stories using the words beginning, middle, and end, and identifying and reading contractions with not. This week our goals will be to read and spell words with the long o sound spelled with the vowel combinations of oa and ow, distinguishing between reality and fantasy, and identifying adjectives in sentences.
This week, our unit will be "Dental Health" for February is Dental Health month. We will be doing a few activities to promote awareness of taking care of our teeth. Chris Bogue (Pacey's dad), a local dentist will also be visiting our classroom on Tuesday to talk to the kids. We look forward to his visit and expertise.
On Thursday of this week, we will also have an author visit. Susan Nees, who is my sister-in-law has written a series of 4 early chapter books. Her series "Missy's Super Duper Royal Deluxe", follows the day-to-day life of an average elementary student. She was scheduled to visit last Thursday, but due to a storm in the state of Georgia where she currently lives she had to reschedule for this week. She will be visiting all the first grade classes. On her visit, she will read one of her books, have a question and answer opportunity and a book signing. If you wish to purchase a book, a form will be sent home on Tuesday. Forms need to be returned by the day of her visit which is this Thursday.
Skyler and Alex were most recently featured as "Star Student". Skyler likes to drink Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper and likes to eat chicken legs. His favorite move is "SpongeBob" and he likes to go rock hunting. When Skyler grows up he would like to be a soldier in the Army. Alex likes to drink pop and eat hot wings. His favorite place is the water park and he would like to learn more about math. When Alex grows up he would like to be a football player.
We will be having library on Day 4 this week. We normally have it on Day 5, but another teacher has asked if I would switch days just for this 6 day rotation. Please encourage your child to return their books by Wednesday, so they can check out new ones.
