February News #1

It's hard to believe we have started the month of February. February is a "busy" month and brings Parent-Teacher conferences, as well as Valentine's Day. This week, I will be giving a few assessments for their conference reports Most of the assessments were ones given prior to the first conference and we will be looking  at the growth your child has made this school year. I am so proud of the growth I have been observing and I look forward to sharing this with you. As for Valentine's Day, it falls on a Friday and we do not have school on that day, therefore, due to a 1:00 dismissal on the 13th, I plan to have our party on the 12th. If your child signed up to bring an item for the Valentine's party, I will send a note home this week. On Thursday or Friday of this week, we will be creating a "Valentine Bear Bag" to put our valentines in. Please send a LARGE brown grocery sack with your child anytime before that date. If you have extras, please send them. I will send a class list home this week. If your child wishes to bring valentines, please make sure they bring one for each member of the class. I do encourage you to have them address and sign them. They will be placing the valentines in their classmate's bags during a recess or free time. Valentines can be sent the 10th-12th.

Math: We completed chapter 6 last week, which focused on Place Value/Counting and modeling Numbers. We took the test over this chapter last week, and I will share it with you at conferences. We also started chapter 7 which focuses on "Comparing Numbers". Within this chapter, we will use the greater and less than symbol (which I have already introduced) to compare numbers, we will also identify numbers that are 10 more or 10 less than a given number. We are also doing the progressive timings for addition and subtraction about 3 times a week. The first level is addition to 6, then subtraction to 4, subtraction to 6, addition to 8, subtraction to 8, and so on. You can tell what level they are on by looking at the top right corner of their timed test. In order to move on to the next level, they need to have at least 95% of the problems correct. If you notice that your child is stuck on a level and want to practice at home, let me know and I can send extras home to practice. Or let me know at conferences.

Reading: Our goals last week, were to read and spell words with the long e sound using the patterns of ee and ea, our grammar skill was the use of see and say, as well as the past-tense forms of said and saw. Our comprehension skill was making inferences as we read. Our main story last week was about Benjamin Franklin and we discovered the genre of biographies. Each guided reading group also read a biography about an inventor/scientist. The text in these books was challenging, but we have learned strategies to help us decode words that are tough to read. They also wrote in their journals about one of their favorite inventions. This week, our reading goals are to read and spell words that end in y and have the long e sound. Our grammar skill is contractions with not and our comprehension skill is sequence. After reading our basal stories this week, we will sequence the main events using the key words of first, next, then, and last. We are also focusing on reading with expression and pausing when we come to punctuation. I have told the kids that being fluent is not speed reading. Good readers read like they are talking and when reading out loud, their audience needs to understand what they are reading. I continue to be "impressed" with the results of our Friday spelling tests. The kids are doing a "great" job learning their words. This week, we will complete Unit 4 and will take that test on Friday. Another assessment I will share at conferences.

Units: We enjoyed our day dedicated to "100". It was fun to take a break from our regular routine. I hope you enjoyed looking at their "100 folders". I enjoyed reading their ideas on the journal part of it. A volunteer listened to each student count to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's and stickers were earned for mastering these counting patterns. Last week, we did a fun literature unit with the book "The Mitten". We read four different versions of this book and compared how they were alike and different. They also wrote their own version and these will go in their portfolios and I will share them at conferences. Special units in February will be on "Dental Health" and "Presidents/Citizenship".

Start Student: Tiana and Stone were most recently featured. Tiana likes to drink pop and eat chicken wings. Her favorite place is Okoboji and her favorite movie is "Dolphin Tale". When she grows up, she wants to be a babysitter. Stone likes to drink strawberry milk and eat pizza. His favorite hobby is shooting hoops and he collects elite socks. When he grows up he wants to be a basketball player.

Just a reminder, as I mentioned above please send a LARGE grocery sack by Thursday of this week. Thanks!!!
