May News #2

It's hard to believe that I'm writing the final newsletter for this school year and we have just 6 days left to go. It has been a fun and exciting year and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with your child. I'd also like to thank you, the parents, for all your support and cooperation throughout the school year. The end of the year always brings mixed feelings for me. Of course, there are feelings of happiness because I have watched each of them grow and develop and everyone has made so much progress, and of course there are feelings of sadness because I have to send them on. It's been a "great" year!!!

Field Trips: We enjoyed our field trip to The Recycling Center and to Quandt's last Thursday. Prior to boarding the bus, heavy rain was coming down and we were unsure as to whether we'd get to go or not, but it let up and the trip was successful. At the Recycling Center we were amazed at how much can be recycled and the kids even had the opportunity to sort paper for a short time. We got to see bales bundled with plastics, paper, aluminum, and even clothes. We also learned that the bales can weigh over 1,ooo pounds. After touring The Recycling Center, we boarded the bus and headed to Quandt's. For this tour, we stayed in the bus. The students were quite amazed and fascinated with the big machines and what they did. A favorite part of the tour was the "giant scissors" cutting up a bus, as well as a giant magnet that was sorting metal. This week, we will head to Breda Park for our picnic on Thursday, and to Swan Lake on Friday to visit Matt and the Conservation Center. The trip to Breda is the only time we will be eating lunch there. The Swan Lake trip will take place after lunch. On both picnic and Swan Lake day, please encourage your child to wear comfortable shoes. I'd recommend no flip flops or sandals. If you haven't returned the light blue note about picnic day, please do so as soon as possible. The kitchen needs to know ahead of time how many lunches they will need to prepare. Thanks!!!

Reading: We took our final spelling test on Friday and finished up the last set of skills in our reading series. On Monday, we will take the Unit 6 Reading test. I am planning to have guided reading groups through Tuesday or Wednesday. Thanks so much for encouraging your child to read their books. I am so proud of the progress they have made.

Math: We will complete our unit on "Two-Dimensional" Geometry on Tuesday and will take the last chapter test on Wednesday. I have really enjoyed our new "Go Math" series this school year. It exposed the kids to a variety of skills and strategies and was challenging as well. I am also proud of the progress the kids have made in math as well. At conferences, I shared the beginning of the year, and the middle of the year "Go Math" assessment. We have now taken the end of the year test. I really enjoyed looking back at their scores and noting the growth they have made. All three tests have been placed in their portfolios. We will try to do progressive timings at least twice this week. They have been quite competitive with these and have really focused on trying to move on to the next level.

Accelerated Reader: I was quite impressed with the dedication many of the kids had towards this program to monitor comprehension. It was fun to watch them grow and become efficient with taking their quizzes. May 9th was the final AR day. I will send home an AR report with their report card. You will be amazed at how many books your child has tested over and the improvement they've shown with comprehension.

Portfolios: These will be sent home with your child on Friday, May 16th. You may recall that I shared many items inside during conferences. You will enjoy looking at the growth they have made from the beginning to the end. Report Cards will be sent home the last day of school.

Volunteers: A great big thanks to the following moms who were volunteers in our classroom: Jodi Boell, Jana Bogue, Amanda Felix, Melissa Nystrom, and Jen Sibenaller. We also had Grandma Lorraine with the Foster Grandparent Program on Thursdays and Fridays, as well as a CHS senior Journey Dirks, who spent time in our room on Friday mornings as part of her internship program. The extra hands managed the Read Naturally program, helped kids fix papers, worked on reading and math skills, and even a few crafty projects. Thanks Again!!!
