We continue to enjoy the nice weather. It's hard to believe we're into November and Thanksgiving is the next holiday to look forward to. Last week, the kids wrote about what they were thankful for and their work is displayed on a bulletin board outside of our classroom. This month, we will have a few "November themed" centers such as creating cornucopias, creating a Native American headband using symbols, writing a thank you to a parent, and their are many books about Thanksgiving at the reading corner.
Reading: Last week, our reading goals were to read and spell words with the short u sound, we identified proper nouns in sentences, and we used a special chart to retell/summarize after we read. The comprehension skill chart was done together for this can be a difficult task for 1st graders to write it out rather than verbally retell in their own words. This week, our goals will be to read and spell words with the l blends (bl, cl, gl, fl, sl, and pl), we will identify the sequence of events after reading a story, and we will practice capitalizing days of the week, months, and holidays within sentences. When working on comprehension, we have been using graphic organizers to record our thoughts as a group. We have also worked on reading contractions with not and is and adding "ing" and "ed" to words. We will also complete Unit 2 in reading this week, which means we have finished the 2nd basal and we will be taking the Unit 2 test on Friday. The students will also have a "vocabulary check" over the words learned in unit 2.
Math: We completed chapter 3 last week which focused on addition strategies. On Friday, the end of the chapter test was given and this will come home soon for you to see how they did. Chapter 3 introduced the following strategies: add in any order, count on, add doubles, use doubles to add, doubles plus 1 and doubles minus 1, add 10, make a 10 to add, add 3 numbers, and use strategies when problem solving. Our goal is to become more proficient when adding. Many of the students have found they no longer need cubes or drawing to solve some problems. They are now able to look at some of these problems and the answer just "clicks". Counting on seemed to click with most of the kids. They quickly discovered that saying the bigger number and counting on the smaller number is a quick way to solve. When the numbers get bigger, the number line and hundred chart are both tools the kids use to count on as well. Many like to use their fingers as well and that is "OK"! Drawing a picture and using cubes are always an option if using the strategies is too hard. At home, you can help your child by going over the facts periodically. Continuous practice will lead to recall of the facts. Flashcards are a good way to practice.
Science: This week, we will do a unit on "Rocks", therefore, I'd like for each student to bring a collection of no more than 10 rocks to school on Wednesday. Please have them in a box or ziploc. We will be using magnifying glasses to observe our rocks and get a chance to look at other collections as well.
Book-it: 12 students earned book-it certificates in October. Slips to record November were sent home Friday on tan paper.
Writing: Our goal during the 2nd quarter is to write 2 complete sentences. We have been practicing this in our journals. The students have also written a couple "How-to" pieces. They wrote one on how to wash dishes and one on how to make a snack. We will complete our current journal soon before starting a new one. These will come home soon.
Star Student: Mia and Yaretzy were most recently featured. Mia likes to eat pizza and drink chocolate milk. When she grows up she wants to be a singer. Her favorite movie is "Monster High" and her favorite day of the week is Friday. Yaretzy likes to eat eggs and drink juice. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Her favorite place is Adventureland and she likes to dance.
HAPPY NOVEMBER!!! Please remind your child to wear a coat daily. Hats and gloves too for the mornings especially have been chilly. Thanks!
