September News #2

Reading: We're learning new words weekly and reading fun stories. We're also enjoying big books in our large group reading lessons. The big books that we have read are then placed in a literacy center for extra practice. A word wall has also been created in our classroom. High-Frequency words practiced during our "Making Words" lessons, as well as words introduced through the basal have been chosen and placed on the word wall. Once a word is placed on the word wall, I encourage them to spell this word correctly when writing. Words placed on the word wall are also written in their personal word books. Word wall words should also click when we read. Thanks for following up with the "Making Words" lessons at home. The extra practice will build your child's decoding skills, and it's a great way to practice spelling and reading too. Do encourage your child to try and write a word in each box. As an extra challenge, you may even write more words on the back after filling up the front. If parents want to help, that's great too, for learning new words is always beneficial. This is week 5 for spelling. The words this week are more challenging, and I encourage you to have your child practice each night. Spelling is off to a "great" start!! Last week, our reading goals were: reading and spelling words with the r blends (br, cr, dr, gr, fr, pr, tr), identifying the setting after reading a story, as well as what the characters did there, and our grammar skill was questions and exclamations. This week our reading goals will be: reading and spelling words with the following ending blends: nk, nd, st, and sk, identifying the author's purpose after reading a story, and writing complete sentences with correct punctuation.

Math: We are working hard in chapter 2 which focuses on subtraction and problem solving. They have learned to listen/ask what the problem is asking. We have used the bar model like we did for addition problems. The model is a visual that allows them to see what part of the problem is missing. They have learned that if we know the whole and one part, we will subtract to find the other part. If we know the two parts, we add to find the whole. Key words in problems also help them decide whether to add or subtract. We have done lots of the problem solving together and I have modeled different strategies to help them out. During calendar, we are focusing on odd and even numbers, as well as using the words "more" and "fewer" when working with numbers. For odd and even, the students have discovered that even numbers make a pair, and odd numbers have one left over.

Apple Unit: I started by  reading a couple of books about Johnny Appleseed. I also read "The Season's of Johnny's Apple Tree" and "Ten Apples Up on Top". The kids created two fun projects last week as a follow-up to these books and these "awesome" projects will be on display outside of our classroom. Therefore, you will get to see them during conferences. On Monday, we will use the apples brought in to create a graph to find out which kind of apple is the favorite amongst us. We will also cut them up and eat them. After eating them, they will write about them using some of their senses to describe. Thursday is our field trip to Deal's Orchard. Please encourage your child to dress for the weather. They are really excited about our upcoming event. We will see the cider press, have a hay ride, pick an apple, and choose a pumpkin. Send a lunch with your child on this day if that is what you marked on lunch form.

Book-it: This reading incentive program is sponsored by Pizza Hut. It begins in October and ends in March. Listed below is how the program will work in our classroom.
1. Your child needs to read just 4 books each month. After reading each book, fill out the book-it form. These forms will come home on Friday.
2. Once 4 books have been read and the form is complete, return the form with your child to school. I will reward them with a personal pan pizza certificate.
3. Encourage your child to read books other than ones sent home for guided reading. If you do not have access to books at their level, the guided reading books will be ok to use. Library books are good choices too.
The only way to get better at reading is to do it, so for the next six months everyone is going to read their hearts out! Each monthly goal will be rewarded with a personal pan pizza and on your first visit to Pizza Hut, they will receive an official Book-it passport to Reading and a sticker to track their reading throughout the six months. On subsequent visits, they will get another personal pan pizza and sticker to add to their passport. Awesome! This program is optional and not required.

Conferences: I look forward to meeting with you during our scheduled time the week of October 7th.

Homecoming: An orange note was sent home on Friday with special dress-up days listed for Fairview kids. Monday is wear "Favorite Color". Tuesday is Favorite Sports Team apparel. Wednesday is Pajama Day. Thursday is PBIS color day- 1st grade wears blue. Friday is orange and black day. Remember no face paint or colored hair allowed during school day.
